Vanished Without a Trace – The Human Cost of Enforced Disappearances in Balochistan
Introduction – A Crisis Hidden in Plain Sight
In the rugged, resource-rich province of Balochistan, a silent crisis is unfolding. Over the past week, at least nine Baloch individuals, including a government health worker and several students, have been forcibly disappeared by Pakistani security forces, according to human rights groups. These disappearances are not isolated incidents—they are part of a systematic campaign of repression that has plagued the region for decades.
This blog explores the latest wave of abductions, the voices rising in protest, and the urgent calls for international intervention.
The July 2025 Surge – Who Was Taken?
Names Behind the Numbers
Between July 1 and 2, the Baloch National Movement’s Human Rights Department (Paank) reported a disturbing series of abductions:
- Talal Baloch, taken from his home in Pasni, Gwadar District
- Safyan Ghulam Rasool Sufi, abducted from Turbat
- Jasim, Malik, Faisal, and Raziq, all seized from Kech District
- Rubina Baloch, a Lady Health Visitor, abducted in Turbat—the second Baloch woman to disappear in a month
In a separate incident, Zeeshan Zaheer, a human rights activist, was found extrajudicially killed after campaigning for his father’s return—himself a victim of enforced disappearance since 2015.
“These are not isolated incidents, but part of a systematic campaign of Baloch genocide,” said the Baloch Yakjehti Committee.
The Pattern of Repression
A History of Silence
Enforced disappearances in Balochistan are not new. According to Human Rights Watch, over 8,000 cases were documented between 2011 and 2024. Victims are often students, activists, and professionals, taken without warrants, held incommunicado, and sometimes never seen again.
H3: Targeting Women and Youth
The abduction of Rubina Baloch and Mahjabeen Baloch (a university student and polio survivor taken in May) marks a chilling escalation—women are now being targeted, breaking long-standing cultural taboos.
“We urge law enforcement agencies to avoid involving women in the reprehensible act of enforced disappearances,” said the Baloch Women Forum.
The Response – Protests and Pleas
Streets of Resistance
In Panjgur, protesters blocked roads and held vigils for Zeeshan Zaheer, demanding justice. Activists carried photos of the missing, chanting slogans against state repression.
International Outcry
Paank has called on the United Nations to intervene, labeling the disappearances as crimes against humanity. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) also issued a grim warning about the shrinking space for civil society.
“No space is sacred in Pakistan—not the courtrooms, not the classrooms, and not even the human rights institutions,” said HRCP.
What Can Be Done?
Demands from the Ground
Activists and rights groups are calling for:
- Immediate release of all disappeared persons
- Independent investigations into extrajudicial killings
- International monitoring of human rights in Balochistan
- Sanctions and accountability for those responsible
Why the World Must Pay Attention
Balochistan is strategically vital—home to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (CPEC) and rich in natural gas and minerals. Yet its people remain marginalized, surveilled, and silenced.
Ignoring these abuses risks normalizing state violence and emboldening authoritarianism across the region.
Conclusion – A Call for Justice
The disappearances in Balochistan are not just a domestic issue—they are a global human rights emergency. As the world watches other crises unfold, the people of Balochistan are asking: Who will speak for us?
Let this blog be one voice among many, demanding truth, justice, and the safe return of the disappeared.
